Louisville surges in aftermath of QB Jawon Pass, but also loses another QB recruit

The aftermath of four-star quarterback Juwon Pass’ commitment to Louisville has been significant, with the Cardinals earning major attention nationwide and landing another big-time recruit on Monday with the pledge of defensive end Mike Boykin. Yet, before anyone assumes that all is rosy in the Cardinals’ nest, the other edge of Pass’ pledge has also taken its toll.

As noted by College Spun, Louisville’s previous quarterback commit for the Class of 2016, Tylin Oden, has since re-opened his recruiting and is now planning for a collegiate future away from Louisville. Oden, who stars for Tennessee power Spring Hill, could be a top target for home state programs Tennessee or Vanderbilt, the neighboring University of Kentucky or even West Virginia.

At 6-foot-5 and 175 pounds, Oden is on the way to the prototypical size for a top collegiate quarterback. He got the hard part done with his genes (6-foot-5 is no slouch) and has the frame to add significant muscle and weight to his body.

Those were clearly critical attributes which Louisville’s coaching staff saw in him immediately, and likely still does even with the addition of Pass. That isn’t likely to help the Cardinals bring Oden back into the fold, but with players like Boykin scrambling to sign up to the Bobby Petrino resurrection tour, there’s little doubt that the program’s recruiting staff will be able to re-deploy that scholarship offer.
