An arrest warrant has been issued for top 2016 wide receiver recruit Darnell Salomon after a football camp at the University of Georgia
Note to potential thieves: Don’t steal and use any Apple device that is attached to the cloud. It will only come back to catch you.
That, apparently, is what one top Florida football recruit is learning the hard way. Despite turning himself in on charges of felony first-degree burglary, Champagnat-Catholic star wide receiver Darnell Salomon has denied wrongdoing in connection with reported burglaries from a dorm room in one of the women’s athletic dorms on the University of Georgia campus. According to a search warrant released last week, his defense may be significantly less plausible now.
As reported by the Athens Banner-Herald, the original owner of the iPhone reported pictures that were not hers uploaded to her iCloud account days after her phone went missing. She also told police that the phone had been renamed “Megatron,” the nickname of star Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. With this new information, police activated the GPS tracking in the stolen phone and were able to trace the device to Salomon’s exact address in Florida, where he had returned following his attendance at Georgia’s annual Dawg Night camp for high potential recruits.
Additional surveillance video from inside the athletic dorm where the thefts took place also places Salomon at the scene of the crime early in the morning of July 19, when the theft took place. The receiver was also charged with stealing a wallet from the dorm room.
Despite the legal cloud hovering above him, Salomon continues to be one of the more sought after receivers in the Class of 2016. Ranked as the number 35 overall junior recruit in the nation by 247 Sports, and one of the top five wide receivers, Salomon holds scholarship offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and LSU, to name but a few of his suitors.
There’s been no word on whether any of those schools would abandon their interest if Salmon was convicted of the theft charges against him. We’ll have to see if that remains the case if more evidence is mounted against the teen.
