Kentucky has had a big week on the football recruiting trail, but the Wildcats’ latest recruit may bring as many questions as answers, largely because it’s extremely hard to tell if he’ll actually ever matriculate to Lexington.
On Thursday, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops received a verbal pledge from Class of 2018 wide receiver Jermaine Eskridge. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder uber athlete is considered one of the top overall prospects in the rising sophomore class, and could be a major momentum changer for Kentucky’s recruiting efforts.
The issue here, of course, was drawn more fully in the prior sentence: Rising sophomore class. Eskridge is still a very young pup. To put a particularly fine line beneath it, Eskridge’s commitment to Big Blue Nation came 30 months before he can legally sign to be a part of Kentucky’s 2018 recruiting class. He’s played just one season of varsity high school football, and he could just as easily wind up being 6-foot-8 as remain at his 6-foot-3 stature.
None of that invalidates or weakens Eskridge’s commitment to Kentucky. It just serves to point out that there is still a very long way for the teen to go before Kentucky fans can truly call the Florida native their own.
In the meantime, Eskridge seems to promise a very entertaining ride on Twitter, if nothing else.
