Colorado, Cal both pick up big WR commitments

Traditionally, when one reads about a top-10 wide receiver committing to a Pac-12 school, USC, UCLA or Oregon spring to mind. Not on Saturday and Sunday, when two of the conference’s oft overlooked programs landed potential game-breaking receivers.

As both reported themselves on Twitter, four-star Cedar Hill (Texas) wide out Jaylon Jackson and four-star Buena Park (Calif.) receiver Taariq Johnson committed to Colorado and Cal, respectively. Of the two, Jackson’s decision was almost surely more surprising, with the 5-foot-10 speedster also holding scholarship offers from in-state programs such as Houston, Texas Tech and SMU and significant attention (though no offer, yet) from national powers Alabama (from the likes of offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin), Texas, Tennessee, Ohio State, Oregon and Baylor.

Jackson will almost surely have the opportunity to compete for playing time soon after he arrives in Boulder, which is a condition that may fall in line for Johnson as well. The Buena Park star is moving all the way up the California coast to be a part of Cal coach Sonny Dykes’ offense, which should play to Johnson’s strengths as a strong wide out and excellent route runner.
