Jim McElwain won’t have to worry about getting any QB recruits in the Class of 2017. The question is just whether this latest QB pledge will play that position when he gets to Gainesville.
As reported by AL.com and other outlets, Blount’s star quarterback Kadarius Toney made his commitment to the Florida coaching staff on Wednesday night. He chose the Gators ahead of scholarship offers from Ole Miss, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and other programs. Critically, the Alabama native he chose to commit to the Gators rather than continue waiting to see if he would receive a scholarship offer from in state powers Alabama or Auburn.
“(Coach McElwain) was real excited,” Toney told AL.com. “He said they were glad to have me in the family and couldn’t wait for me to get down there.”
Toney’s current coach, Lev Holley, told AL.com that the Florida staff has committed to giving Toney a shot to compete as a quarterback, though no commitment that he will stay there permanently. Still, some recruiting services are already categorizing Toney as an athlete pledge as opposed to a dual-threat quarterback.
Whatever he ends up being, the consensus three-star recruit will add both depth and more talent to Florida’s already impressive class.
