On Wednesday we brought you brief news of the day’s biggest recruit in a literal sense, a Tongan athlete named Motekiai Langi who signed to play football at BYU. As you might have guessed, he’ll be expected to contribute to the Cougars’ offensive line when he returns from a two-year Mormon mission. Until then, the general public will continue to rave and be stunned by his sheer existence at 410 pounds.
Yes, Langi weighs 410 pounds. That isn’t the particularly unique part about the newest Cougar, however. No, what stands out is that he is also one heck of an athlete. That’s what the Cougars coaching staff told us all on Signing Day, and now we have a very brief video that backs up that assessment.
The clip above was dug up by our USA TODAY Sports Media Group friends at The Big Lead, which noted that the younger Langi (his cousin is BYU linebacker Harvey Langi) apparently goes by “Mo.” As one might expect of a Tongan, Langi’s sporting background comes from rugby, but he has been in the process of a conversion to American football, reportedly participating in multiple American football camps.
Eventually we may get to see if he can really play once he straps on the pads and steps on the field. Until then, video like this pickup clip of Langi pushing down an opponent will have to suffice.
